A Heart Revealed Proper Romance Josi S Kilpack 0783027079906 Books

Although set in the Regency period, I would not call this a romance Most of the novel takes place while the "heroine" (more about that in a moment) is banished to a remote cottage in Yorkshire, where she barely, barely interacts with the hero by the end. The heroine, Amber, is a spoiled and unlikeable debutante at the beginning of the novel, who gets her comeuppance when she is afflicted with loss of her hair. She is too unsightly for society and her family banishes her to the remote cottage with one servant. There, she hides herself away but, very predictably, learns to be a better person. Meanwhile, our hero, who met her once in her previous life and inexplicably fell in love, has an estate nearby and comes to visit the cottage about three times, by the end of the book, and our heroine actually talks to him only the last time. Major, major sections of the novel are spent describing how Amber (our heroine) adjusts to life without servants, sewing curtains from old dresses and learning to bake cake. This made the novel feel long and plodding -- there truly wasn't enough interaction between hero and heroine to qualify it as a romance. And neither the heroine's 180-degree personality reversal nor the love story were subtle or nuanced or developed enough to be credible. So, the plot was a bit of a drag, and at times the author's language is clunky. It just didn't deliver as a romance at all, and wasn't fun to read.

A Heart Revealed Proper Romance Josi S Kilpack 0783027079906 Books Reviews

This is a totally new style of writing for Josi Kilpack. And she carries it off well. Normally I don't care for historical romance, but I do enjoy this author, so I thought I would give it a try. I was not disappointed.

Amber Sterlington is enjoying being the belle of the ball during her London season. Her life is shattered when she is forced to not only withdraw from the round of parties, but to be banished entirely to a tiny hamlet in the far north of England with only one maid for assistance and companionship. She spends much of the book as an outcast, longing for a return to the society she has been brought up in. A virtual recluse, she never ventures outside her small cottage. She must rely on Suzanne to travel to the nearest town for their supplies.

Amber does find love and happiness in a unique way. It was fairly predictable, but the author manages to create a completely satisfying resolution.
"A Heart Revealed", by Josi Kilpack is satisfying, deliciously delightsome journey, that I imagine everyone, after a certain age can relate to ('cause, well, none of us get out of here alive, and time wounds all heels, etc).

The first few chapters were, perhaps, not as tight as they could have been, and it did meander in a somewhat stagnant space before we came to the true start of the tale.
But honestly, the rest of the book more than compensated, as it picked up in value as it picked up in speed. By the end it was profoundly gorgeous, & I wanted to live there a while longer.
Which reminds me a bit of my experience reading George Eliot's "Middlemarch"; it took a while to set it all up, & loved it too much to put down when I was finished.

I highly recommend this author & this book!
Enjoy!
A Heart Revealed - PG
Violence none
Language nothing offensive
Sex no sex, some kisses

This book is a delight! It's one of the *Proper Romances* like *Edenbrooke* by Julianne Donaldson. Truthfully, I was worried that maybe it overpromised by putting that label on itself (I really love that book), but my fears were put to rest! I just loved it!

The exposition is slow and thorough. We get to know the characters of both the H and the h very well, so when the heroine makes changes we can see how drastic they are and celebrate her new person. The H has it *together*. What a man! Highly recommended for all ages. I put the PG rating because I don't think a small child would find it interesting.
Exceptional writing! An exceptional book! An exceptional story!
Sometimes a story just hits you and just stays with you. I am forever a fan of Ms. Kilpack! If I didn’t have other obligations, I would skip work tomorrow and reread it all over again!
Society hasn’t really changed all that much from this time period book. We still judge people, still see their flaws and even one’s own family will abandon you. But there is hope and we get to see those that don’t judge and are pure at heart and truly love you for who you are.
I didn’t like Amber Sterlington in the beginning. She was rude, conniving and self absorbed even to the point of upping her sister. Yet Thomas Richards still cared for her. She was beautiful. But only on the outside. Funny how one thing can change the course of one’s life and change your whole outlook on life and people. That is when Amber really became beautiful.
Thomas Richards doesn’t care about the ton or society and your station in life. He wants to make his own way. He cares about people and their character. He tries to forget Amber when she publicly humiliates him and he sees other things about her that show her true character. But he can’t seem to forget her.
When Amber is exiled with only her maid to attend to her in a small cottage, she learns to care for herself and for her maid. She also lives near where Mr. Richards home is and when he realizes that she is living there not how she is used to and that she is caring for herself, he sees the changes in her and begins to hope that maybe she would consider him.
Amber however doesn’t realize who he is. She is afraid of the public to see her. But she is not rude like she used to be.
I love seeing Amber’s transformation. I loved Thomas from the beginning. He is a good man and has a big heart. He didn’t judge. For Amber has a very visual condition and she doesn’t want people to see her. She begins to see that her maid’s family cares for her yet Amber’s own family doesn’t seem to care for Amber. She begins to see the world around her in a different light and I loved every minute reading all about it. I cried for her as she transformed and for Thomas too as he is such a good man.
Ugh, it is one of the best books I have read. I love to read about people who learn to overcome and who change with a real intent and for those good people to find true happiness.
It’s now several days since I’ve finished this book. I am reading another book. But I just can’t get this one out of my head. Would I be as accepting of someone who had a major flaw? I know if it was my children, I would.
